So, if you ever have a dead car you actually charge the battery in the engine compartment (like a regular car) -- you don't ever touch the 12 volt inside the cabin?

There are two batteries -- the hybrid battery is charged by the gas engine. The small battery on the interior of the car can be charged -- in the engine compartment (even though the battery itself is inside the car).
