Well, it finally happened. After keeping my Insight scratch and ding free for eight months it got hit & run in a parking lot. I need a new front fender and headlight. The estimate for the headlight is $868 and the fender is $199. Add in labor, paint, tax, etc it’s just shy of $2500.

Yikes....I hate the hit and runners, what a shame to happen to your new car! I had a similar parking lot incident with my GEN 2 but I was fortunate a bystander was concerned enough to provide me with help identifying the culprit.

Wow, that's one expensive headlight! As was discussed in another thread, just hope they last the lifetime of the car!

This is what I fear whenever I leave my Insight by itself. Not even a year old and it already got dinged. I recommend a Honda certified body shop for the repairs but it seems like you already have chosen one. Would you be willing to provide pictures of the damage? I hope your insurance takes care of everything and you will be back driving it again soon.

P.S. Have you check if the parking lot/nearby businesses have security cameras?

No cameras or witnesses unfortunately. I have shop that I use that does excellent work and I have no doubt it will turn out like new...or even better. My insurance will cover all but my deductible and the agent said it won’t affect my premium. The paint is three stage, so that added to the cost too.

That's a bummer! In these cases, it makes me think to get a dash cam for my car, however, since I am not a fan of seeing cables all around my car, I may hire someone to make it nice and neat so that it's hardwired professionally and I got myself covered for any hit & runs as well as possible not at fault accidents.

I installed two dash cams in my car (front and rear) but they are only on when the car is powered. They make really good dash cams now that can be hooked into your fuse box and will automatically record when they sense the car has been impacted, even slightly, when the car is turned off (draws power from the fusebox). Makes me want to get one of those cams, especially since I just experienced a hit and run as well (but to a lesser extent, only the door handle was damaged - See this link).

Get a dashcam, video doesn't lie, and you might get the occasional entertainment out of watching some of the clips.

Here are some of my dashcam footage from my previous car.

^Hit & run on the car in front of me.

^Wrong way driver? Not sure how he got this far...

^Drunk driver? Made a wide right turn and hit the oncoming car. I remember the other car honked at him repeatedly but the truck just ignored it.

You can get the headlight for $583 online if need be.

OMG - what is WRONG with people these days?! The offending car didn't even slow in that first video. Does your dashcam set-up run all the time, or was your car already started in that first video?

I was in the car idling when that happened. Here's what ran through my head...

  1. Did that guy just swerved and kept going?
  2. Thank you whoever was looking out for me tonight that it wasn't my car
  3. Calling 911 to report the hit & run
  4. Dispatcher told me it's going to be awhile before a cruiser can come(busy night for them) because it's not an emergency since no one was hurt
  5. I left the scene after waiting about 20 minutes (wish I had paper and pen so I can leave a note for whoever owned the car *I have paper & pen in my car now after experiencing this*)

I mentioned that same thing to my body shop guy. He just said “I don’t set the prices”. Since I’m only on the hook for the deductible it doesn’t much matter to me.
On a positive note (?) - if you ever considered the parking sensors, you could probably get a break on the install since one of the two fenders will already be off.
