  1. 2,477 Insights sold for August 2019
  2. 17,243 Insights sold in 2019 so far
  3. 44,096 electrified vehicles(Honda & Acura) sold as of August 2019 vs 27,292 sold as of August 2018 (Year over Year % change of +61.6%)
  4. I think this is the first time Honda has disclosed exact Accord Hybrid numbers.
  5. Insight + Accord Hybrid = 5106 out of the 6305 electrified vehicles(Honda & Acura) sold.
Electrified vehicle sales again topped 6,000 units, with Accord Hybrid leading the brand with 2,629 sales, a gain of 56.5% for the month.
Honda electrified vehicle sales are on track for a second consecutive record year and double-digit YoY sales increases on the strength of the Accord Hybrid and Insight sedans.

Insight sales are holding strong at ~40% of total electrified sales for both July and August 2019.

This month's blurb mentions a "gain of +56.5% for the month" on Accord Hybrid August sales of 2629 units (41.7% of total electrified), suggesting that July Accord Hybrid sales were 1680 units (31.4% of total electrified). https://hondanews.com/honda-corpora...ory-setting-multiple-all-time-monthly-records

Out of sheer curiosity, I went thru their data for prior months and found the last Accord Hybrid sales data was posted in Dec 2017. Honda seemed to stop reporting Accord Hybrid sales once it fell below ~1000 units per month. Honda also changed their reporting in Aug 2018 to total "Electrified" sales rather than "Hybrid" sales, and started including the Clarity in their totals.

Honda is in the news for their overall August 2019 results, which is an "all time monthly sales record" for American Honda, and a "best ever month" for the overall Honda brand.

A big chunk of this was 'hot' sales on the Civic and Accord (30k+ each). This is ~2 months before the new model year will arrive for these models (Oct), and looking back there are several Augusts in Honda history that have been prior best-evers.

August is 'only' the 2nd best sales month for the Insight (2477 units), after May 2019 (2653 units)... and May was ~2 months before the new model year arrived for the Insight (Jul).

So, note-to-self for next Honda purchase... a good month for volume sales and potential pricing deals looks to be 2 months before the new model year arrives...

I found out the US government keeps track of how many HEVs are sold by model. Based on that data, the Accord Hybrid sold 23,817 and the Insight sold 23,686 during 2019. Interesting, both Honda hybrids have almost an equal amount of buyers.

Interesting data! I expected the hybrid accord to have far more sales relative to the insight. I must see 10 accord hybrids to every single insight I see on the road. Also, the accord is a much more popular model overall.

It's hard for me to tell the difference between a regular Accord and Accord Hybrid from far away. Do you look for the hybrid badges?

A few things struck me as well:
  • Prius sales are declining (47k lowest sales year since 2004 - not a surprise, but interesting to see in actual numbers) but still about double that of the Insight and Accord Hybrid. And Prius sales are 41% of all hybrids sold since 1999.
  • RAV4 hybrid is the fastest growing model, doubling sales to 93k since last year.
  • The Insight and Accord Hybrid have 12% of the hybrid market share in 2019, equaling that of the declining sales for the Prius in the same year.
  • Corolla hybrid and Hyundai Ioniq sales are lagging behind the Insight.

Another interesting thing I want to add is that Honda doesn't offer fleet sales unlike the other automakers. So not all of those other hybrids are sold to private owners. Honda also rarely offers any cash bonus incentives on their hybrid vehicles.
