Auto Fill-Up Didn't Fill My Tank

2024 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Wolverine51
At my first fill-up (5-10 miles after "Fuel Low" warning), I filled until the pump automatically shut-off the flow.

I didn't notice until later that the pump receipt showed only 5.658 gallons had been dispensed. And my fuel indicator is about two and a half segments from the full mark.

Any guesses on why the shut-off stopped so short of filling my tank?

Did you wait for the car to depressurize the gas tank before opening the cap?

If so, it could be something wrong with that gas pump, or your vapor recovery system.

This thread offers some thoughts on fill-up variability (e.g. fill speed, pump sensitivity, temperature) - https://www.gen3insight.com/forum/2...ge-mpge-economy/610-vehicle-mpg-accuracy.html

With it being winter, however, vapors and pressure build up should be lower than in warmer weather. So as andrew28 mentioned, there might be an issue with the vapor recovery system. The Owners Manual (P547) suggests another attempt at filling before consulting dealer:

"If the filler nozzle keeps turning off when the tank is not full, there may be a problem with the pump’s fuel vapor recovery system. Try filling at another pump. If this does not fix the problem, consult a dealer."
From the same Costco pump I put 1.0 gallon (pump reading) into a gas can for my snow blower's use.

The receipt from the pump says 0.532 was dispensed. So I guess that pump was badly screwed up.
It's strange that the video above, regarding fueling the Insight, does not mention the need to turn the fill cap until it clicks at least once.
