CarPlay disconnecting

Has anyone seen issues with Apple CarPlay disconnecting?

I plugged my iPhone (XS Max running iOS 12.0) into the USB1 port with a certified cable (Anker Powerline II+) and then powered on the car. CarPlay showed up on the Home screen, and I then started Waze (just updated today with a CarPlay compatible version). After a couple of minutes of driving, CarPlay disappears, Waze disappears, and it shows a greyed out Smartphone Connection button. I unplugged the lightning connector from my iPhone, and then plugged it back in - CarPlay shows up again, and I started using it again. Again, after some minutes, CarPlay disappears, and I'm left with the Smartphone Connection.

In case you think is due to the new iPhone, or to the new version of Waze - this also occurred on my iPhone 6S Plus (iOS 12.0) using Google Maps - but since iOS is so new, I only used Google Maps once or twice, and didn't think much of the disconnection.

Did you try USB port 2? If that doesn’t work try a regular Apple lightning cable. Some cables especially the cheaper third partty ones are just not good at handling there fast charge port.

I had an Anker one for my old android that didn’t work well and had to buy a different cable. I switched back to iPhone when I got my Insight and the cable usually makes a difference for wall and car charging.

dj1andddt2 - Thanks!

I swapped out the Anker cable with the default Apple cable this morning, and didn't have any issues on the way to work or on the way home. I'm frankly surprised, since Anker is certified, and they're way more durable than the Apple cables. I'll report back in a week with a longer term opinion...
No problem. Yeah it sucks but even Apple certified cables sometimes give me the accessory not supported error when charging. Glad it’s workibg hope it keeps it up!

Haven't had any problems all week with the Apple cable - looks like that was it...
I am having issues with my CarPlay as well I’ve had my car brand new from the dealer lot since sept 20, 2018. CarPlay was working perfectly until now. When I turn on the car, it doesn’t even recognize my phone. Tried resetting my phone and swapping out to an official apple cable. I also tried resetting the car system to factory settings and that seemed to work but only for about a week. I am really disappointed since I paid for the EX model just for CarPlay.
Any chance your phone updated to iOS 12 right when the problem started?
After posting at the end of September, CarPlay was consistently good, even after the backup camera recall/update. Until today. CarPlay was working, and then the screen went black. After a few seconds, it came back. A few minutes later, it went black again and then CarPlay stopped. CarPlay hasn't come back. I've restarted the phone, switched between the two ports (yes, I'm using an official Apple lightning cable) - but the car doesn't recognize my iPhone Xs Max running iOS 12.1.

Any ideas or recommended next steps?
On the infotainment unit, I would try deleting your phone from Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay. On your phone, remove your car from CarPlay if needed. Basically, set it up as if they've never been connected.

This is what I have to do occasionally except I'm using Android Auto.
Vietpolo, I did delete my phone from CarPlay, but no difference. I *did* restore the infotainment unit to factory defaults, which did allow my phone to be detected for CarPlay. In my case, restoring factory defaults kept my radio presets.
Try just restarting your phone. I have had issues a couple of times with my iPhone X, and a simple restart did the trick.

Tried that previously, but that didn't restore CarPlay functionality. Since my last post, it's worked flawlessly after the Infotainment Restore to Factory Default...
I’ve narrowed down the issue to the iPhone C series (s, r, max or original). My iPhone 7 Plus has no issues but all new X series will no work. I am using an original apple lightning cord. I’ve restarted and reset my phone. Only way around is to factory reset the Honda head unit. This is only temporary. I can use CarPlay for a bit and eventually it freezes and crashes. Occasionally it will show “smart phone utility” has crashed. I’ve asked both Honda and Apple. Apple is mute and Honda doesn’t know what to do.
Edit: I meant to say iPhone X, not iPhone C.

I have iPhone X but mine works fine. It randomly disconnected about 5 times since I bought the car 2 months ago. I need to disconnect the cable and reconnect when this happens. This type of thing happens with any other app, so I don't mind it.

If that’s the case, it could be my hondalink head unit. Because I’ve tried an iPhone X and a XR and it’s happened to both, it must be a Honda thing.
IPhone X user here.
Initially had the same disconnect issues but since updating the WAZE app to the latest version (I believe the first Carplay compatible version may have been a little buggy), no issues the last couple of months. I also had Honda handle the recall that was related to the rear camera functionality.

Coincidence of these factors that would seemingly be unrelated (or not), the problem disappeared and rock solid system since.

Since you mentioned updating the WAZE app, I thought about it and my iPhone X actually got disconnected only while I was using Google map. Mine could very likely be the app problem.

It could be Waze or Google. I deleted Waze and will test it over the next few days.
I found another forum at Apple talking about the same issue. Looks like a known issue but no one is doing anything about it. Frustrating.
