I don't know if the volt would be a completely fair comparison since it's a plug-in with considerable battery range. Just having the tiny 20 mile all electric range on my fusion energi has led to it getting better gas milage than my insight due to the way the car uses just battery mode and has a lot more to work with before becoming hybrid drive.
A little off topic but related to comments on the Volt earlier in this thread: the Chevy Volt is being discontinued! The last Volt was produced 2/19/19. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/ground-breaking-electric-chevrolet-volt-213323943.html

I would had bought one if the rear middle seat was usable. State, Dealer, and Federal incentives would had made the car even cheaper than the Honda Insight for me. Would had drove it like a regular hybrid even though I have no place to plug it in. I have read that GM loses money on each Volt sold and dealerships didn't like selling them(The Volt doesn't need much maintenance which means less service department revenue).
