New owner of '20 Insight EX. During the first miles driven, I noticed the entire vehicle going in loud vibration by resonance with the engine, usually, when accelerating slowly, when the indicator passes the blue section.
Took the car back to the dealership service and they still try to fix the issue after 6 days. Service adviser mentioned they worked on software updates and "moving wires around the engine block" (?!?) but the engine resonance issue still present.
I was allowed to drive a similar new car, and it did not create the resonance.
Any owners encountered similar issues? TIA
Could you share video of the sound, and maybe what the power flow display looks like when this occurs (i.e. EV, hybrid, or gas powered)? Does this occur in all drive modes (EV, ECO, Normal, Sport)?
The vibration occurs in all drive modes and is not an "engine roar". In fact it appears only at a certain RPM or the gas engine. If I continue accelerating, the reverberating sound disappears. To recreate the resonance I have to accelerate slowly, with engine engaged, and when the needle passes the blue section it is appearing. If I keep it there I can sustain the vibration, but it is very annoying. Resonance appears with engine cold or warm.
The car is still in service. The adviser called tonight and said the vibration is gone, but will keep the car a few more days for some "people from Honda" to also drive it. He mentioned that the "air box" (?) was not properly installed.
Air box is the box that holds the engine air filter.
Did they do anything, other than fix the air box, that would have fixed the problem? Transient issues suck. I have a resonating vibration sound in my minivan I've been chasing for a couple months now. Since the car is over 12 years old, I'm fairly sure it's a rusty heat shield somewhere. This would not be the case in a new Insight. There have been several complaints of sounds coming from a-pillars. Can you localize where the sound is coming from, or is the whole car cavitating like when the USS Dallas threw it into reverse in Red October during the Crazy Ivan?
The air box is partly responsible for tuning the engine sound, but more than likely at the specific rpm the engine was vibrating just right to vibrate the air box against metal, that would be my guess. More or less engine load would change quite a bit, as the engine rotates slightly within it's mounts as the torsional load is applied. Find just the right angle, and it moves the air box to the perfect spot an voila you've got a vibration.
Granted this is just a theory based on the information present, I've seen similar issues with exhaust vibrations caused by a worn motor mount.
As of right now, the car is still in service, since Jan 11th.
hasarad, thank you for your replay - the resonance was taking over the entire car. Did not get a written report of other details that they did to the car.
Also, Wifey'sInsight - thank you for your "insight" into the problem. It makes sense and I hope they identified the problem and fixed it.
The service adviser called yesterday to say the car should be driven today by some Honda engineer and should be ready.

I'm very curious if or how this issue will be resolved. I've experienced what could also be called a resonance in the rear deck (the "hat-shelf" in ye olde days) behind the back seats at certain engine rev levels and battery state of charge. More specifically, the power level is in the upper blue quadrant or just into the dashed grey, and the power is being split between driving the wheels and charging the battery.
The resonance sounds like bass feedback in the rear speakers, or some other low frequency vibration in that plastic deck. I don't think this is the "roar" folks describe when pushing the car. Frankly, I've stomped the pedal and gotten the power pretty far into the grey, and while the revs get up there, I wouldn't quite describe it as a roar. Just the typical noise of a high-revving sub-two liter four cylinder.

Do you notice this more in a particular power flow or drive mode (EV, Normal, Econ, Sport), or does it happen across every mode? And do you only notice this at higher speeds (i.e. gas engine engaged)?
Normal drive mode, gas engine engaged and power system providing drive to wheels as well as juice to charge battery. Typically under moderate loads and speeds between 30 and 50 mph. The resonance or buzz occurs in a very narrow rev or power band.
Did you ever find a resolution? I’ve got a new 2020 with 200 miles and experiencing the same issue. Taking it in on Monday. I was able to get some video footage to show the dealer. It’s like the entire car is vibrating and it’s causing the rear deck and it’s brake light to rattle loudly. Seems to happen early in my drive and is harder to reproduce once it warms up a bit. Happens when accelerating either just past the blue line or around 1-2 hashes into the grey. Frustrating. I drove a loaner Insight and it was way quieter.
Thanks for the quick response, I forwarded the info to the dealer and they have ordered a replacement microphone. Should have my car back by Wednesday!
Read posts 11 through 15. Although not the OP, someone with the same problem found resolution at the dealership.
