Consider too that there are armed and enraged people on the road these days, and one never knows what will set them off. The local news reports road shootings on almost a daily basis on the major freeways all around me. One driver the other day who was chased into a wooded area, crashed, fled on foot and the road rage guy pursuing him got out of his car, shot him and drove off. The victim survived but he was unable to tell the authorities what made the shooter turn into a murderous a-hole. Having a wimpy horn just might save your life. I tend to avoid the horn and flash my brights if I need to get someone's attention. Often they're looking at their phone.
Hands Free law is finally going into effect here in Minnesota this summer. I’m hoping the annoyances of distracted drivers goes way down here.

Yeah, bunch of crazy people out there and I don't want to lose my life cause I honked at someone. If I use my horn, I just tap it once. If nothing happens I just switch lanes.

If they’re looking at their phone, flashing lights won’t get their attention. The horn is needed for morons who don’t notice the light has turned green, which happens ALL the time around here. I’m not scared to use my horn. It’s use has saved many a sideswipe and inadvertent pullouts from occurring, as well as saving many minutes sitting at a light.

What drives me even more nuts is the people who sit there, too scared to use their horn, who apparently have 5 more minutes of their life that they would love to just waste sitting at a green light for no reason.

^Here's what could happen when you beep a masshole (not my video).

I was shocked at that story. I had to see where you live ... SF Bay Area says details on your profile! Yikes, I wouldn't expect that around here.

I decided to drive to work today instead of taking BART, and the traffic came to a complete stop on the way home. Guess why? Someone opened fire on a car at about 12:30pm on 580. All eastbound lanes were shut down. The cops and reporters are unable to say why the shooting occurred, whether it's gang related or any other info.

This kind of thing is happening on a daily basis around here. It doesn't help that San Leandro is basically the car theft capital of the world--glorified suburb of Oakland. Tons of smash-n-grabs too.

I'm thinking of upgrading to this horn.

Andrew if you've not seen my channel I have done a few modifications on the car that are talked about. While most of them are Honda parts added on, a few are other minor changes including a horn replacement, some stereo speaker changes along with dynamatting, interior lights to LEDs and a viewer submitted video which is fantastic and shows how to add a power plug to the rear of the car.

4. The “main” problem with invoking the horn one has to be careful when one wants to beep the horn. Contrary to previous hondas where one could activate the horn by hitting along the spoke to the outer rim, on the insight you have to pound the center area of the steering wheel. Of course, what you then get is a pathetic “toot” rather than a real car horn. That’s bad enough, but the real problem is that it’s all too easy to hit the main button, even a glancing touch, and turn off the lane keep assist and the automatic cruise control. Doing that should require a longer press not a passing glance!
So... a motorcycle made a 'blind' left turn from the west side of an intersection into my lane going north, without glancing for cross traffic and coming within 1 ft of hitting me. I had a shoulder to maneuver into and I was trying to swerve/stop (as were the 5 cars behind me); I wanted to alert the motorcycle so I leaned in to... the MAIN button. WTF!!

[RANT] All prior Hondas I've owned had the horn button near the thumb area. But now, as I'm trying to steer/swerve, I need to remove one hand from the steering wheel to use the horn?! The 'thumb' area of the steering wheel is now full of other buttons for ACC/LKAS/cruise... but I think Honda needs to restore the horn button in that area as well. But apparently based on off-placement and puny sound, Honda designed the Insight's horn for just recreational rather than emergency use! [/RANT]
I made a video on how to beef up that horn if you like. The Honda horn is tinny so I put a Marco tornado in instead. Nice Italian sound. Check out you tube channel verdier400.

Maybe we should try a train horn next time. 😊

I saw that horn upgrade... if you can also figure out how to upgrade the activation/position of the horn instead of the middle position, that would be a godsend.

Pushing the MAIN button in a near-crash incident did nothing but annoy me and leave the motorcyclist completely unaware. :plain:

Passive heat worked well for me as well with the added bonus of not having a fogging issue. This time. 😉 I did not see any help with mpg, but I will continue to try it and see if it changes with repeated tries.
Do you garage Ruby? I find starting temps to be a big influencer. Also, have you had the opportunity to use the new horn in the real world? I'm tempted, but want to keep the amps down to avoid the need for a relay.
Yeah she's in a garage although it's not heated and gets very cold in there too. I'm keeping an eye on this passive heat thing and watching to see if I get any mileage boosts. I plan to put up a video about this technique.

Since I work at a mall, yes I've had to use the horn . When we installed the horn we held it for a minute without any heating on the wire or any fuse problem. I can't remember but I think we may have upped the fuse to 20 from 10. I don't foresee any problems with the horn.

Anyone else beep and wave like an idiot when they see another Insight driver then get bummed when they don't notice? Or is it just me?

I'm too embarrassed by the weak "meep meep" standard horn to ever use it to call attention to myself. I just try to get into the other car's line-of-sight when I see another Insight on the road...

If they look at me I wave back at them. So far I have got 2 waves out of my many Insight sightings. Usually they don't notice because they're focusing on driving and not really looking for another Insight.

After almost creaming a FedEx truck that pulled out in front of me today, I'm a fan of a better horn too. Don't know what I'll do yet, but I'd like a train horn on it!
I still have a hard time getting used to activating the horn from the center of steering wheel (vs thumb position on older Hondas). By the time I remember where to find the horn, the issue has passed and I end up aggravated.

I too think the horn is crap. Here are some notes that I made while investigating replacement.

I bought a set of high / low horns from Amazon to put on ($16). I pulled the cover above the grill but I barely can see the horn from above...

The stock horn is next to the drivers side headlight. It can be seen much easier through the grille. I believe it could be easily unbolted via a socket with a long extension and a wobble joint, but the harness connection is obscured. The problem is, if the bolt securing it is removed it looks like it would be very hard to reattach without removing everything around it. Especially so since I cannot reach it to remove the power connection. Reassessment considered. I don't want to remove the bumper, all of the header trim, headlight and grille just to get to the **** thing.

I can reach the horn with my fingertips through the grille and noticed upon slight pulling - prodding that it feels like it weighs maybe a pound at most. OK. So maybe it can stay and either supplement the new horns or it can just hang there. I still will need access to the horns positive signal. The fact that its connection is hidden is troubling. The horn, grille, radiator support, bumper and headlight all connect in the that same location, and I haven't yet traced the source of horns power. It likely shares the same harness as the headlight, but that is obstructed as well.

It looks like a good mounting space for the new horns could be lower beneath the headlight behind the foglight area for easyaccessibility from below (at 1st glance anyways). There appears to be an oil cooler about 6-8 inches back from the foglight grille and I am considering a bracket for them down in front of that. Mounting the horns on the radiator support does not seem practical due to the inter-connectiveness of all of the front end parts. With the cover on top removed, it was clear that the whole front end is a honeycomb. With no access big enough for my hand with just cover removed.

I need a wire schematic to proceed or I need to remove the headlight to figure out whats going on there. Perhaps some guidance from anyone that has removed the bumper. Just pulling the bumper / grille might be easier, but installing the horns in front of radiator from above is not an option.

Wiring wise, I'll need:
a tap to the original horn feed wire (any ideas on color of that wire?),
a larger power wire to source for the feed to the 2 horn setup and also for some fog lights (maybe 2 separate wires, but seems unnecessary),
a pair of relays to run horns and fogs,

a negative wire for relays, horns and foglights (horns I bought don't use grounding through the bracket - good because that is often problematic)

trigger wire for the fogs
a good place to tap for power

I think I might use an old GM style high beam switch and mount on the floor to the left of the brake pedal to trigger the fogs. Easier than mucking under the dash and more easily maintained removed etc, and less of an impact on aesthetics. Also no need to source OEM switch and still looks stock versus some autozone switch etc.

Has anyone else mounted foglights themselves on these cars? Seems I remember reading someone paid the dealer to install OEM variety, but I am sure a cheaper solution exists and there really is no reason not to do this at the same time as the horns.

Further input from others requested.

Jay
Did you ever get any feedback on accessing the horn?? All I saw in teh thread was inane blather about road rage!
