This is the first real mechanical issue I’ve had.. this is what the shop quoted me and what they recommend replacing.. unfortunately it’s a big job ..

Well, I am at about 253K and I am at an independent shop and what originally was thought as a possible valve cover gasket leak is actually a timing cover gasket leak. The dealer misdiagnosed it as a valve cover gasket leak twice, but after doing a follow up at the independent shop, they discovered the timing cover gasket leak.

Did the dealership charge you to diagnose the problem? If not they probably were just guessing instead of taking the car apart to check.

no it was just a visual inspection during oil change.. I hope after this fix I’m good for a while with respect to not having to fix things.. my car is high mileage but still pretty young..
