My closest Honda dealership just got in their first 2020 Honda Insight. It has a VIN ending in 006040. That means it is #6040 of the 2020 Insight. I assume it was built in November or December if they just got it in. The reason I think Honda is capping the amount of Insights being built is because the VINs were a lot higher at the same time for the 2019 Insight. For example, mine was built 09/18 and it was #10,330. Anyone seen or got a higher VIN for the 2020 Insight?

The highest current VIN for 2020 Insights at local dealer (with 20 Insights in inventory) ends in a serial number above 006400, so a few hundred more built since that one delivered to your dealer.

I think Honda over-built the 2019 model, and waited to produce 2020 models until more cars sold through:
- The highest reported US 2019 serial number in the forum so far is 33315
- The VIN for the last remaining 2019 model at my local dealer is 33493

The total number of US Gen3 Insights (2019 and 2020) sold so far totals 34487 thru Nov 2019... and it seems Honda is dialing up 2020 production now that the 'over-production' of 2019 models has sold.

For anyone wondering about this 'serial number' talk, the last 6 digits of the VIN indicate production sequence number. Here are some quick reference threads for VIN info:

Honda is definitely not going to be selling as many Insights this year.

Its no longer a first year of production and all the high profile coverage has dried up.

There are low mileage previously loved cars available now, where there hadn't been for the full course of the first model year.

and still no widespread advertising of the Insight.

every one who wanted one has one.

it's pretty rare that sales numbers go up after a first year introduction. especially if that model isnt enormously popular. the only one that comes to mind is JK Wrangler and really only after Jeep produced a four door model, JKU.

Honda typically releases a 'refresh' of new models 2-3 years from launch. It was a 2.5 year cycle for the GenX Civic:
- 2016 Civic launch date = 3/15/16
- 2019 Civic refresh date = 10/10/18

Will be interesting to see if they do that with the Insight to generate new news/interest, or keep the same design until next generation.

Given Honda's "global architecture" announcement, I think it will be the latter... with low/no refresh until they announce what's next for the Insight overall...

The Insight has always taken a break(discontinued) between generations and came back as a different looking car. :) We might not see a 4th gen Insight until 2027 if the 3rd gen Insight takes a break after 2023.

Unless sales improve dramatically (like 10x, to equal Civic or Accord monthly sales), I can't shake the gut feeling that the Insight will be absorbed into the 11th Generation Civic, based on Honda's announcement of 'global models' built on a streamlined architecture... https://www.gen3insight.com/forum/17964-post13.html

3 months later, with the 2021 Insight just about to come out (3/24/20), the highest VIN serial number for a 2020 Insight at a local dealer is now 14900+. That VIN is listed as "in transit."

So Honda roughly produces 2500-2800 Insights per month, and produced less than half the number of 2020 Insights (14.9k+) than 2019 Insights (33.5k).

Some of the limited battery supply might've went to the CRV Hybrid.

Perhaps... The Insight has a 60-cell 1.1 kWh lithium ion battery, and the CR-V hybrid has a 1.4 kWh battery. But it also seems Honda produced "enough" to cover expected Insight sales; I don't think they lost any sales between 2019 and 2020 models. They built more 2019 models than sold, then dialed back on 2020 models after seeing sales from the initial year. I think Honda was smart in staggering the launch of the Insight and the CR-V hybrid.
