Honda has patented a new "external pedestrian protection" airbag system, intended to reduce injury rates for motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians.

The Honda Sensing cameras and sensors are used to scan for hazards, and the information is used to determine where and how fast to deploy the airbag. The patented system deploys external airbags in corredponding positions/pressures.
  • If a "large" pedestrian is detected, the largest airbag will activate from below the hood to help 'catch' the person rather than having the person bounce over the roof of the car.
  • If a "small" pedestrian (child) is detected, the same airbag will deploy but at a lower pressure to prevent the person from bouncing off the car an into a cross-traffic.

The patent also includes other mechanisms designed to prevent a pedestrian from being thrown to the roof or hood of the car. No timing or context is provided for application, so specific implementation is TBD.

Wow. I would worry about false positives but then again I grew up with land line telephones only. The tech is amazing!

Pedestrian safety laws and their consequences have been a disaster for automobile design.

So many cars look like fat balloons due to the forced hood and headlight height requirements.
