Domestic sales of new electrified vehicles, such as hybrids and electric models, accounted for more than 40 percent of overall sales of new cars for the first time in the first half of 2019, due mainly to their high fuel efficiency, according to the Japan Automobile Dealers Association.

For electrified vehicles, more than 90 percent of the sales were hybrid cars. Meanwhile, sales of electric cars, which are expected to spread rapidly the world over, were less than 2 percent. Sales of hybrid vehicles powered by gasoline engines and electric motors increased 7.3 percent to 600,000 units.

In December, Toyota Motor Corp. partially remodeled its Prius hybrid, and Honda Motor Co. fully remodeled its Insight hybrid, with both automakers focusing on the development of such electrified vehicles.
I'm not able to find Japanese Insight sales numbers but it sounds like it could be doing alright in Japan.

I found Japan monthly sales data by make/model on this Japan Automobile Dealers Association site (and added same-month US Insight sales data next to the Japanese data, for grins):
DEC 2018 = JP 1038 (rank #38) | US 2235 | ratio = 46%
JAN 2019 = JP 1382 (rank #37) | US 1762 | ratio = 78%
FEB 2019 = JP 1289 (rank #44) | US 1587 | ratio = 81%
MAR 2019 = JP 1535 (rank #44) | US 2151 | ratio = 71%
APR 2019 = JP 0802 (rank #45) | US 2028 | ratio = 40%

The Gen3 Insight started selling in Japan in Dec 2018, and something funky happened in April 2019 (ripple-effect of production stop after Celaya flood? or other production issue for Japanese models at U.S. Greensburg plant?). But more likely something happened across all of Japan (i.e. general import backlog?) because national car sales were down for ALL brands/models in April 2019.

Only sales for the top 50 national-ranking cars in Japan are reported by model in the report. Insight sales in Japan are ~63% the size of the US market, and got as close as ~80% of the US market in Jan/Feb, 2 months after launch in Japan.

Not bad numbers for the Japanese Insight! :)
