I've been doing quite a bit of digging and I'm yet to find a concrete answer to this question: Would a stereo head unit from an EX/Touring work if I put it an LX?

I appreciate the help. I'm stuck choosing between a 20k miles LX and a more expensive 44k miles EX. Apple CarPlay is a must-have feature for me, so this is crucial to my decision

It’s not a 100% sure answer, but most likely no, it would not work. In modern cars, the BCM (body control module) is programmed to only recognize the stereo that came with the car. Dealers are clueless/unable to force the BCM to recognize a stereo from a different model. I ran into this issue on a 2016 Fiat 500X. Mine came with the base stereo with no touchscreen interface or Bluetooth. I wanted to upgrade to either the 5” or 7” available touchscreen radios. Not possible. I had to go aftermarket. The EX upgrade is worth settling for more miles imo.
