There's a theme of Manufacturer Communications (MC) from American Honda to Honda Dealers over the past 3 months, and it seems to mirror some of the "electrical" complaints / observations from forum members. Honda has issued same letter 3 times to dealers, with different start/end dates... so it seems like Honda is looking for dealers to provide more data and examples of these issues for diagnosis.
The symptoms of this would appear as the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) staying on, with Body Control Module (BCM) and Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) signaling an active fault.

The memos ask dealers to notify the Technical Research & Support Group of 2018-2020 Accords and Insights BEFORE any repairs are attempted, so that information can be recorded and specific instruction provided. They are looking for one or more of the following Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) to be present -AND- no repairs attempted yet by dealer for the following codes:
  • U1280: B-CAN Communication Bus Line Error [BUS-OFF]
  • U1281: Auto Light Control Unit Lost Communication with MICU [Body Control Module]
  • U128D: Auto Light Control Unit Lost Communication with MIC U [Body Control Module]
  • U1291: BCM Lost Communication with Relay Control Module

These memos don't signal a specific issue, but the repeat communication leads me to believe Honda suspects an issue and is starting to troubleshoot.

After a brief break (April/May) Honda has resumed posting the same notice to dealers, but now over shorter (1-2 week) date windows AND over different system components aside from electrical (engine, cooling, powertrain). They're still looking for examples of the issue so that Honda can troubleshoot further before any dealership attempts any type of repair:
