The glass windows on the Honda Insight have factory tint

Lightly tinted windows??

When I look at my Aegean Blue EX windows the windows in the doors seem to have a light tint to them. When I looked at the small triangular window behind the rear door it is clear glass but then looked through the rear door glass I could really notice the difference. Has anyone else noticed this?

I read somewhere that they had added a sound absorbing layer to the door windows to reduce noise but cannot find that article again. Could that material create a light tint?

Based on the descriptions in the parts catalog, they are tinted with a slight green hue. This is very common though and has been for decades. My 65 Mustang had "Tinted" windows from the factory (green and barely noticeable). As for differences between the windows... The sources of the windows are all different so that might come into play. I would be hard pressed to believe many folks could tell the difference between them though.

From the descriptions in the parts catalog

Front Windshield Glass Set (Green)(Fuyao)

Left Front Door Glass Assembly (Green)(Pilkington)
Left Rear Door Glass Assembly (Green)(Agc)
Left Quarter Windshield Glass Assembly (Green)(Fuyao)

Right Front Door Glass Assembly (Green)(Pilkington)
Right Rear Door Glass Assembly (Green)(Agc)
Right Quarter Windshield Glass Assembly (Green)(Fuyao)

Rear Windshield Glass Set (Green)(Nippon Itaglass)

Tempered Glass
Insight uses 4.7mm tempered windshield glass to help place it near the top of its class in wind-noise performance. In addition, Insight has 4.0mm tempered front door glass and 3.5mm tempered rear door glass. The available one-touch power moonroof with tilt functionality uses 3.5mm tinted and tempered glass.

Windshield 4.7 Tempered
Front door 4.0 Tempered
Rear door 3.5 Tempered

I saw this list too. The windshield is listed as tempered glass and that is incorrect. It’s laminated glass. I think the logo on the glass itself may even say ‘Laminated’. I worked in auto glass manufacturing for many years and the light tint is used in passenger cars to meet the national standard for light transmittance. If I remember right it had to be a minimum of 70 percent transmittance, but the actual glass is closer to 75. It’s been a few years though and those standards could certainly have changed.

I always wondered why my glass windows look darker at night compared to some of the other cars. Did some research and it seems like most new cars now come with factory tint. Confirmed that the glass windows have 70% min transparency etched on them.

Nice!

Glad to know that. Thanks for sharing.

When I first started hunting for my G3 Insight, I looked at Florida listings to see if they offered "Privacy Glass". No, not even in "the Sunshine State". But then I started to think about how I would want the front side windows just the same shade as the back windows. That's not ever going to happen, so I prefer the uniform factory tint. Better than nothing.

I will say that visibility on this car is very good. No problem seeing what is around you...or in front of you. That's a big plus for driving safety.

The 70% minimum transparency is a legal thing. It’s specified by FMVSS 205 and ANSI Z26.1. When looking at that logo on the glass, the DOT number indicated the manufacturer. The M number is the manufactures model designation for the type of glass. The AS2 means it complies with the standards for use anywhere but the windshield. Almost all cars are manufactured with same level of tint, but the color may vary. If you check the windshield it should say AS1. Anything darker than 70% (privacy glass) should say AS3. In general that would only be allowed in locations behind the front seat, or in sunroofs. Those are the federal standards which is why cars aren’t already manufactured with the darker tints and it needs to be added afterwards according to individual state laws.

It seems like 3 different companies manufactured the glass on my Insight.

Pilkington - Rear Windshield, Front Driver/Passenger window
AGC Automotive - Rear Driver/Passenger window
FY - Front windshield, the small glass windows behind the Rear Passenger doors

Wow, talk about 'diversified supply chain.' Apparently it makes sense for Honda to source these separately, rather than focus on economic scale with a single vendor (?).
Also semi-random but interesting (and new info to me at least)... the "dots" on the glass indicate month/week of manufacture: https://www.quora.com/How-can-I-find-a-cars-windshield-manufacture-date-month-and-year
Factory tint?

Hey guys! Planning on getting my Insight tinted today but was wondering if it comes tinted from the factory. If so, what percent?

If I remember correctly, the side windows and rear windshield are 70% vlt from the factory. If you look at the windows, where the manufacturer data is, it does say on each window.

Added your question to existing thread on factory tint... 70% is the starting amount of tint. Pictures and summary of details by window are also included in posts above.
