I'm not sure if you know but the Honda Insight is actually made in Indiana. Be proud driving that car in your state.
I thought I saw some posts on this forum that talked about Insight built before and after the floods in Mexico. This led me to believe Insights were made in Mexico. Please help me understand how I got this confused.

Some engine parts are made in Mexico, but the car is assembled in Indiana.

“The new Honda Insight exemplifies our growing investment in the production of electrified vehicles in America and our associates in Indiana are proud to play a key role in this initiative,” said Isao Matsuzaki, president of Honda Manufacturing of Indiana. “As the lead plant for Insight production globally, we are committed to delivering the quality and reliability that our customers expect.”

Three Ohio plants contribute the Insight’s powertrain. Honda Transmission Manufacturing of America (HTM), in Russells Point, Ohio, has invested $29 million for production of the Insight’s twin electric motor unit, which is the heart of the Insight’s innovative gas-electric hybrid powertrain. The Insight’s hybrid battery pack is assembled at the company’s Marysville, Ohio auto plant, where Honda also produces the just-launched 2019 Accord Hybrid. The Insight’s 1.5-liter Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine is produced at the company’s Anna, Ohio engine plant.

Among the changes made to the Indiana plant for Insight production is a new 19,200 square-foot building expansion to accommodate in-house subassembly of the vehicle’s front-end module. This modular approach to the construction of the vehicle’s front frame and associated components, such as the radiator and cooling fan, was first introduced on the 2016 Civic and is now employed for the Accord and CR-V as well. The new Insight marks the first time the Indiana plant is subassembling the front-end module in-house. Other new processes for Insight include the installation of electrified vehicle systems such as high-voltage wiring, the battery unit and power control system.

It's not just Indiana, 3 other Honda manufacturing plants in Ohio, also contributed to making the 2019 Honda Insight.

I think this got confusing because Honda's part and assembly strategy is spread out globally. Honda chooses to produce parts in multiple locations, and sends them for assembly in different locations. For the Insight, Honda chose to source parts globally (Japan, Mexico, US/Canada) but produce in Indiana.

Honda referred to mini-subdividisions within the single Celaya plant, including full auto production (Fit, HR-V), component production (e.g. Insight engine part), and a transmission plant. Other than the Fit and HR-Vs produced on site, the components manufactured at Celaya are part of a larger supply chain where vehicle components are sent elsewhere:
  • The Honda Fit and Honda HR-V are produced entirely in Celaya, and their production was suspended for the month of July. With tooling and equipment recovery, production of these vehicles did not resume in Celaya until mid-November.
  • The Honda transmission plant in Celaya resumed operation on July 9.
  • Insight production at the Indiana plant was suspended for the month of August due to lack of a critical engine part produced at the Celaya engine plant. Based on existing parts inventory, the Indiana plant was able to produce Insight through the end of July, and resumed production in the beginning of September.

Thank you Mr. Natural, Andrew28 and Insightfully for clearing up my confusion and providing great info to all on this forum about the Insight manufacturing process.
What plant puts the Insight together? Anyone have a picture of their window sticker with foreign parts content?

Honda of Indiana celebrated making 2 million vehicles yesterday. In a press release, they have finally confirmed HMIN is the exclusive(Only found reference of being the lead plant previously) global producer of the 2019 Honda Insight. So that pretty much means the Japanese Insight is built in that facility. If I live in Indiana, I would probably go do a factory tour, and ask if I could buy some of the Japanese Insight's parts/accessories.

In addition to CR-V, HMIN produces the Civic sedan and is the exclusive global producer of the 2019 Insight Hybrid. All Indiana-built vehicles are produced on the same production line, which demonstrates HMIN’s manufacturing flexibility. https://indiana.honda.com/article/honda-reaches-2-million-production-milestone-in-indiana
Honda also released a nice 2019 Digital Factbook, which also names the same 3 Ohio plants for the Insight as mentioned above. The factbook also provides info on their production strategy for other US vehicle manufacturing:
  • Insight Battery = Marysville, OH
  • Insight Engine = Anna, OH
  • Insight Transmission = Russells Point, OH
  • Insight Assembly = Greensburg, IN

The Insight Battery, Engine, and Transmission plants are within a 60 mile radius in Ohio, and the Greensburg Assembly plant is just 150 miles away from those Ohio locations.
ah crap, not Japan but freaking Indiana ????? disappointing

It's kind of the 'way of the future' given tariffs. Honda's broader supply strategy has turned more 'local' than exporting from Japan. My prior 90s Civic was made in Canada.

The VIN includes location of assembly (among other production info), and it is coded into the first 3 numbers of VINs as a global standard among manufacturers.

Specific to Hondas sold in the US, the first VIN digit discloses one of the following assembly countries:
- J = Japan
- 1 = US
- 2 = Canada
- 3 = Mexico
- 4 = US
- S = UK

The 11th character provides info on assembly plant (duplicates are due to different country/region combination):
- A = Marysville, Ohio, USA
- B = Lincoln, Alabama, USA
- B = Aalst, Belgium
- C = Alliston, Ontario, Canada
- C = Saitama or Sayama, Japan
- D = Guadalajara, Mexico
- E = Greensburg, Indiana, USA
- E = Montesa, Spain
- F = Atessa, Italy
- F = Ping Tung Factory, Taiwan
- H = Alliston, Ontario, Canada
- J = Karawang Factory, Indonesia
- K = Kumamoto, Japan
- L = East Liberty, Ohio, USA
- M = Hamamatsu, Japan
- P = Ayutthaya Factory, Thailand
- R = Manaus, Brazil
- S = Suzuka, Japan
- T = Tochigi, Japan
- U = Swindon, England
- X = El Salto, Mexico
- Z = Sao Paulo, Brazil
- 1 = Manaus, Brazil
- 2 = Guangzhou Factory, China
- 3 = Huangpu Guangzhou Factory, China
- 4 = Timmonsville, South Carolina, USA

For our global Insights, which are produced at a single plant, all VINs have first digit of 1 (US) and have 11th digit of E (Greensburg, IN).

I geek out over things like this, so final bonus fun fact - all of our Gen3 Insights have "ZE4" in the VIN, which is Honda's identification for this generation of Insights. In Japan, this identifier is commonly used to identify models and find parts.

thanks
I only know of the Marysville plant. I don't think I have ever seen another US location on stickers. Granted I have only ever looked at non-truck/SUV only.

How long has the Indiana plant been in operation and what models has it been producing ?

Check out Honda's 2019 Digital Factbook (click on 'photo' then download PDF).

It shares cool info all together in one booklet, like:
  • Greensburg, Indiana, plant (Honda Manufacturing of Indiana, LLC) opened in 2007 (section 2.1)
  • Greensburg produces the Civic, CR-V, and Insight, totaling 250k+ cars per year (section 4.2)
  • Greensburg began producing Civics in October 2008, added CR-Vs in early 2017, and launched the Insight in May 2018 (section 4.2)
  • The plant previously produced the Acura ILX from 2012 to 2014, and has produced 1.6 million total vehicles so far (section 4.8)
My 09 Civic and 14 CRV were built in Canada. The 19 Insight is my first car built in the USA. If I remember correctly my 17 Ford Fusion was built in Mexico. I didn't experience any major problems with my previous 3 cars and pretty sure the USA built 19 Insight will be the same.
Honda's Greensburg Indiana plant had lots of experience making Civics before taking on the 2019 Insight

Dedicated employees are still a large element in producing a quality product

For anyone interested in seeing sequential assembly for the Accord, a manufacturing video is posted in the following thread:
https://www.gen3insight.com/forum/5...-being-built-start-finish-video.html#post6822

...and is also referenced in a separate thread on "how long it takes to build an Insight."

No full-length detailed production videos like these are available for the Gen3 Insight (yet?)...

The Greensburg plant (HMIN / Honda Manufacturing of Indiana) also celebrated their 2 millionth vehicle (crystal black pearl CR-V) that rolled off the lines in May 2019 -- 10 years (+8 months) after their first mass production started on October 9, 2008.

Honda recently tweeted the above article.

  • Honda invested $32.5 million at HMIN, including a 19,200-square-foot expansion to the plant specifically for Insight production.
  • The Insight is built exclusively at HMIN plant, with the exception of a few parts that are produced in plants throughout Ohio.
  • The Insight was the fifth electric Honda model in an 18-month span.
As Insight project leaders, both Minor and Tarver said that their experience with seeing the Insight grow from the design phase to the final launch was something that gave them pride and joy.
“I think there’s been a lot of pride and hard work that has gone into this project,” Minor said. “I, myself, was able to take the Insight home and drive it with my family. Seeing it from a drawing, to three years later, getting in that final product, it really was full circle.”
On February 28, 2014, Honda officially announced ending production of the second generation Insight after the 2014 model year.
Kind of surprising they discontinued the car due to poor sales and then about a year later someone up top greenlight the Insight again. The same thing happened with the 1st gen to 2nd gen Insight. Not sure if the Insight brand has some special meaning to Honda or they just like to keep at something until they succeed.

Honda's 20 millionth car built in Ohio rolled off the production lines on January 13, 2020. The 20 million total is from Honda's 3 Ohio plants in Marysville (13.9M), East Liberty (6.1M) and the Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville (2.7k). In total, Honda has built 26.1 million cars and light trucks in the U.S. since 1982... and ~77% of them were built in Ohio.

Fittingly, number 20 million was a Platinum White Pearl Accord Hybrid at the Marysville (Ohio) Auto Plant, which was Honda's first US plant established in 1982. - Honda Reaches 20 Million Auto Production Milestone in Ohio

In a Greensburg (Indiana) City Council meeting, Honda communicated that it will further invest $110 million over the next 3 years to expand the plant by 64,000 sq ft of production space.

Honda Manufacturing of Indiana in Greensburg currently produces the Insight, Civic and CR-V on the same production line. The expansion add 3x the space of the 19,200 sq ft added for Insight production, but is 'only' a 5% addition compared to Greensburg's existing 1.3 million sq ft of production space.
