I've never gotten mine to show MPH it only seems to want to show KPH

 

Thanks. I confirmed during a test drive today that it does not show digital speed in mph.

 

Seems to me that Honda could easily change that with a software patch if they wanted to. Perhaps, if enough people ask for it, they would consider it.

 

Ater owning 3 prius cars my wife was used to the digital mph and so far that is her only complaint about the car .

 

I agree with you Tyler: they should be able to fix with a software patch and owners should complain. I talked to Honda USA customer service and (after many calls and a trip to the dealer) convinced him the problem is with all Insights and not just mine. They then said "That's how it works- only digital speed shows in KPH." I find it a big problem as the needle on the analog speedometer is often hidden by the wheel, so you might don't know how fast you're going. Plus the owners manual says the digital speedometer IS available in MPH. Frustrating.

 

Pages 128 and 130 have information about the tires and tire labeling. Can you double check where the Manuel has the direction to enable the digital speedometer.

I was at my dealer and asked about the digital speed only showing in kph. He attempted to set it to mph with no success. When I got home I researched it on an Accord owner forum. I thought they might have the same issue and sure enough it’s been discussed plenty over there. The conclusion there is that it’s the way it’s designed to work. If you’re in Canada it’s the exact opposite issue. Only shows in mpg! I sent an email off to Honda to ask if they ever plan to ‘fix’ it for us.

 

I can confirm that in Canada you can only get the digital speed read-out in MPH and of course up here I would like it to be in KPH. Pretty dumb move on the part of Honda.

 

As a Canadian, let me say you guys are shooting yourselves in the foot not switching to metric.
The world in integrated now, and virtual every country you want to buy or sell in uses metric.
The longer you hold onto the old system, the less advantage you have in world markets.

I still remember doing my degree in the US, and in things like physics exams I would just walk up to the instructor and say I need to know how many feet are in a mile, which he would provide.
Metric just makes sense, especially for technology/science.

What you are failing to realize the US IS the world market. And the US is one of the least integrated exporting countries in the world with about 8% of our GDP being exports. And most of those exports are to NAFTA countries. The bottom line is if every other country in the world stopped receiving imports, the US would barely notice. Compare that to Germany with 50% of their economy depending on exports . A reduction in exports would cause the country to fall into a deep depression. And guess what country guarantees the open and free shipment of trade across the world … the US. The idea not using the metric system is somehow hurting us in the world market is laughable. I highly recommend you read the book "The Accidental Superpower" and the "Absent Superpower". Or find a YouTube lecture by the author Peter Zeihan. It is absolutely fascinating.

As stated before, there is not a digital speedometer. But you can switch units.

■ Speed Unit
Enables you to show another speed unit on the driver information interface and set the displayed measurements to read in either mph and km/h.
Select the Power/Charge screen.
2 Accessing contents in the main display P. 131
Press and hold the left selector wheel when you select the Power/Charge on the driver information interface. Each time you do this, the unit will change from mph to km/h or vice versa. After this, a confirmation screen will appear for a few seconds.

 

There is a digital speedometer. If you follow the instructions above it will display a digital speed in Kph in the center of the display, just above the temperature. It will also change the cruise control set speed to kph. And if you have the Trip computer up on the infotainment screen it will change that to kph. It will not change the analog speedometer. But, if you try to toggle to mph, it changes the cruise control setting and Trip computer to mph and just displays a blank area where the digital kph was on the info interface. ( Just the opposite on Canadian Insights.)

 

MPH not displayed

I’ve heard Honda’s standard line that it is not a glitch that mph is not displayed as an option. I think this is BS. MPH is displayed in all the other parts of the display, why not on the standard speed display? I am hoping for a software update to fix it.

I'm also hopeful that a software patch can address the issue. The thread below mentions that US cars can display in KPH, while Canadian cars display in MPH. It seems like it's Honda's attempt at speedometer conversion rather than posting both concurrently (as on the dials of older cars). However, Honda has missed that drivers could benefit everyday if the display were in familiar units, without conversion.

What is the issue with MPH? It is not displayed in the driver section?

Yes, I lost my Satellite radio presets and some vehicle preferences, but not all. I don’t know why some changes and others didn’t (my auto high beam setting reset, but not my door lock preferences). It was all worth it to finally get the system update issue resolved.

I love my insight, but my only remaining gripe, is the fact that mph is not displayed. Hopefully Honda will come up with some type of firmware update to resolve that issue.

 

Guessing he wants a digital MPH display, which isn't possible in U.S. models. But you can get a digital KPH display.

 

Yes, and why would you not provide MPH in the United States and only KPH?

 

I think it's the way Honda intended to address "cross border" mileage conversion reading for those of us that drive to Canada, rather than including KPH on the speedometer. They probably didn't take into consideration that the digital indicator would be helpful for more than just short term conversion.

No changes to digital speedometer availability as of yet. US still reads KPH and Canada reads in MPH.

Personally, I don't think Honda will change this. I think this is the tool Honda offers for translating speed when traveling across US/CN border, since dual speed markers aren't on the circular speedometer default (as on older cars).

 

We can only hope that they will update this and other little things.. I wouldn't hold my breath though - Honda is not a computer or cell phone manufacturer and will not invest a lot of money unless it has something to do with safety and compliance.

God I hope not. Considering my car reads route 100 signs as speed limit signs all the time, the car would probably kill me.

 

No Digital Speedometer

It really would be nice to have a digital speedo right in the middle of the instrument panel. It sure would round out the digital aspect vs. the needle speedo.

 

I have been using a digital speed ODBII HUD kit, the one I got is not stable, but it's nice when it works. It was $11, I might try some other ones.

 

I haven't seen any so far that aren't either very unstable or just plain gaudy in what they display.

 

 

@vinylrobot - at first I thought this post was in follow-up to autonomous cars/driving, given the mess of traffic and street blockage in front of you. But then I saw the faint glow of speedometer reading as a heads-up display.

Was wondering - Is your OBDII HUD kit able to show other measures, in addition to speed? Is the projection unit battery operated and/or wireless (don't see any wires)? Also per your post in separate thread, what do you see and/or what happens when it's "not stable"? Is it just the display that's affected, or the actual OBD reading?

 

Joining this thread belatedly as both my wife and I have recently discussed the usefulness of our 8th Civic digital speedometer, being in the top tier dash bump, functioned like a HUD to focus key info to the driver (with less critical fuel level and engine temp too).

I know that there are fans and haters of the 8th/9th Civic two tier display, so I was curious to see what eventually the 10th settled on. The attached photo does seem show that the 10th kept key info in the center at the top with a digital speedometer. The analog in the Insight just seems to be so much wasted space (shifting the driver focus to the left side, and squeezing ACC info in the middle). Wish they could have adapted the Civic display to better center driver attention.

Now I have to catch up on seeing for myself the frustration about getting a digital speedometer display in MPH.

[This thread also hit nostalgia with a 5th Civic dashboard, but my love for my '94 and its dash was more about how I could take it apart and put in Alpine stereo with iOS device integration.]

 

My roommate has a 2018 CR-V that has a dashboard just like the thumb in @elvin's post. I actually really like it.

I also came from an 8th Gen Civic with GIANT digital readout right in your face, and am having real trouble with the dial. Talk about first world problems! haha

Waze can display a digital speedometer in CarPlay & Android Auto now. It's not perfect due to having to glance to your right but it's something. :smile:
