Winter Tire Strategy - Insight in Snow

I've always been a Bridgestone Blizzak guy (for studless snow tires they are as good as it gets for snow traction, IMO). However, the rolling resistance sucks. Out Outback averages 32-33 mpg in the summer with the stock tires on it... when I put the Blizzaks on, it drops to 28-29. I am eying the Michelin X-ice now... has anyone actually run a set on their Insight yet?
Check out posts 71 thru 105 earlier in thread for discussion of X-Ice in use. :)

Overall, I have positive experience. But at a very slippery hill, when the ABS light keep flashing, only electric motor was working. And it moved very slow. A little bit scary at that point.
Did you see just the ABS indicator (round circle) or did you also get a message on Brake Performance being reduced? And when only the electric motor was working, was that due to traveling at low speed (low throttle)? Or was there message that indicated gas engine wasn't available?

Attached is the page on deactivating traction control (aka Vehicle Stability Assist or Electronic Stability Control), for quick reference. It turns on at the start of ever drive, even if turned off on prior drive:

You're using 15" wheels? Will those wheels clear the Brake Rotors?
Could use clarification from @whiteinsight, but I assumed the 15" were for winter downsize (within recommended Tire Rack range) from 16" LX/EX standard tire spec. There are some snapshots from Tire Rack that andrew28 shared in 'alternate tire sizes' thread which are helpful reference.

Michelin X-ice3 can go 20-25k miles before changing. That's amazing for snow tires. That's 4-5 winter seasons:)
Will you be opting for X-Ice then as your snow tires for the season? If you're interested, Costco carries these in the 17" Touring spec and 16" LX/EX spec (winter downsize for Touring). With $110 discount for tires and installation, the total price is $597.92 mounted OTD (or for tires only - $140/tire = $562 full set) thru 11/1/19.

Hello, I have the Touring-trim with factory 17" wheels.
I'm getting Snow tires and want 16" wheels.
What 16" wheels would you buy? (Light weight and great deal on four 16" wheels)
I live in the northeast and winters here are crazy. What 16" snow tires would you buy? 70miles one way trip to work:-/
There are helpful posts from last season if you can read thru earlier posts in this "winter tire strategy" thread:

RE Tires
- Blizzaks were recommended last winter by @sleewa (post 10 & 38 & 53), @Insight'nAround (post 42)
- Michelin X-Ice were recommended last winter by @ddemetra (post 11 & 30), @LennyR (post 26), @IndyRacer (post 29), @whiteinsight (post 63), in addition to suggestion @andrew28 offered above

RE: Wheels
- Junkyard '16-'18 Civic rims and/or another OEM model were recommended by @hasarad (post 22) and @Aware (post 24)
- Closeout alloy Enkeis were recommended by @sleewa (here)
- Sport Edition CS were suggested by @whiteinsight (post 63)

Wow, you caught me by surprise- the car drives much more solidly than the GEN 2 and I just incorrectly assumed therefore it was MUCH heavier. I have a Touring version and I think the wheels add some extra weight over the EX version, but I do appreciate the feedback!
Below are the spec comparisons, with Gen3 Touring added. Weight distribution seems to be the Gen3's asset in snow handling.
Gen2 EX = 2727 lbs @ 58.0/42.0 % weight distribution
Gen3 EX = 3000 lbs @ 61.0/39.0 % weight distribution
Gen3 Touring = 3078 lbs @ 60.6/39.4 % weight distribution

I have a hilly driveway which presents challenges during winter weather, especially in icy conditions. At times when conditions were especially slippery, my old GEN 2 Insight had to be left at the bottom of the driveway. [...] I was very pleasantly surprised my GEN 3 Touring made it up the driveway without any issue at all (and with stock tires)!
This is great! The Gen3 is 'only' ~270 lbs heavier; the new weight distribution (due to high voltage battery placement?) makes a difference.

Gen2 EX = 2727 lbs @ 58/42 % weight distribution
Gen3 EX = 3000 lbs @ 61/39 % weight distribution

I did get a more serious error message showing up on the screen - saying to go have the dealer check out the road mitigation, lane check and braking - all of the same systems that indicate the radar was blocked - but wiping away all of the snow off of the plastic area under the hoodline *and* the bottom air dam seemed to make the error go away.
Is the bottom air dam the full horizontal area below the fender? Or just the area below the radar?

It was snowing fairly well the day I took the picture above, but not blizzard conditions. Kinda of a wet thick snow. I wasn't on the highway for more than a 5 minutes before the radar turned off all the safety features that it works with.
Thanks for the description. I saw your post this picture in a couple threads and wondered whether it was a true after-drive representation, or if certain parts of the car had already been cleared before the picture was taken.

The only feature that might be useful would be collision avoidance - but given the conditions, I'm really paying attention and shouldn't need the help!
...also the "standard braking" that collision avoidance applies may not help in snow/ice conditions, so better that you are in control as well! Thanks for sharing your perspective. Drive safely this afternoon!

We received another 3" of snow this afternoon - and drove almost entirely in Normal mode through the hills of Bellevue. [...] We're expecting another 3" tonight, and more snow this coming week - so I'll have more to report by the end of next week.
Have you had any issues with the low clearance (4.29" under full load) in areas of snow accumulation?

Adding to the snow tire discussion, was wondering if there are "best practice" recommendations from forum on drive settings for the Insight in snow? I'm used to selecting lowest possible gear, and the CVT is throwing me off.

Do any of the following make sense to simulate "lowest possible gear" and best low-speed traction in snow/ice conditions?
1 - ECO mode
2 - ECO mode with max regen
3 - Other combination -?

...OR is it best to just drive the Insight "as normal" and let the car's safety features like Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system manage traction?
