Has anyone had a problem with their wireless charger not working after a hot day when the car has been sitting outside?

I'm in the southwest so we're talking around 100 F outside, and hotter inside the car. The sun is blocked with a windshield protector.

I thought I saw someone else recommend that model here, but didn't find the post with a search.

It works fine in the morning, but consistently doesn't charge on the commute home in the afternoon.

 

What you describe isn't out of the norm. The device likely has a thermal cutoff temperature. 100 degrees outside must result in some crazy temps inside. Although not listed in the Amazon page for the device, does the paperwork that came with the device list the operating temperature range? I'd bet your well-into-the mid-100s temperature exceeds it.

 

What you could do it drill a hole in the console and have the pad above it and the control board below. However there is not much room there and the battery is directly under it. You can probably just cut a notch on the front side and hang the board in there. If memory serves, that is an empty space.

 

I bought wireless charging coil and a very short USB cable from eBay for a total of $3.
My plan was to fit the coil under the existing tray insert. The coil is mostly flat but the control unit is not, so the tray doesn’t sit flushed.

I have strong concerns over over-heating and potential fire. It has very little airflow under the tray insert.

I purchased mine on eBay. I trimmed the sides with a blade but afterwards I figured it would have came out better just cutting it with scissors. I also cut the cable shorter and soldered it to the board. Works fine.

I got this from Best Buy recently.. forgot the brand but it was about $40.. came with dash mount, vent, and windshield mount.. I opted to use the vent mount because we still have hot days in SoCal now and the vent provides for cooling to my phone when it’s exposed to the sunlight.

In addition to the wireless charging, I use my lightning cable to charge it ( in hopes “double charging” will speed up the process).

Have you noticed actual benefit from double charging? (wireless + wire)

It seems like wireless charging maxes out for pre-iPhone 12 at 7.5W still a lot less than USB-C/PD fast charging by wire at 12W to 20W. With iPhone 12 magsafe wireless charging, you'll get 15W which begins to match wired charging.

Personally, I'd stay with plugging it in, since there's no wireless CarPlay or wireless Android Auto support. You'd have to fall back on Bluetooth.

I like the look of this one better, but I'd have to measure before I'm sure it'd fit. Only downside is the cable is integrated, and probably far too long.

Honda doesn't currently offer a QI OEM wireless charger pad as an option for any Insight trim level, and I haven't seen aftermarket versions yet. (The market might be too small?) There's a QI OEM kit for the Civic and a QI OEM kit sold for the Accord, but their dash set-ups are pretty different from the Insight.

I've seen that it has been discussed that no OEM wireless chargers for the Insight exist from Honda, but has anyone found an after market Qi wireless charger for the Insight? Or has anyone found a thin rectangular charger pad that would fit well in the phone compartment next to the transmission buttons?

Looking for any ideas!

 

Cheap but works. The design is the reason I bought it, it brings the phone to an angle and fits the tray and leaves an edge on the sides to hold the phone. I have a Pixel 3 but it is actually a better fit for my old Pixel XL, too bad no wireless charging on that.

 

As mentioned, the "build your Insight" from Honda doesn't list a wireless charger pad as an option for any trim level. If you're technically inclined, there is a QI OEM kit sold for the Civic and a QI OEM kit sold for the Accord which you could explore. The College Hills site (in links) also includes installation instructions, which provide a sense of scope. However the dash set-up for both the current Civic and Accord are pretty different from the Insight, so you'd probably want to measure/compare before purchasing a kit.

Unlike the Civic, the Insight doesn't appear to have a wireless charger pad option available from Honda.
