Infotainment Issues - crash / restart / blank

My infotainment screen has reset itself three separate times on different occasions while driving. Has anyone had this issue?

Can also confirm unexpected console resets. I was also having cases where CarPlay just stopped playing sound, but Google Maps still worked. I switched cables and it seems not to be happening.

Hoping that a software update stops the restarts and adds wireless CarPlay.

Mine did this for the first time ever today when I was backing out of my garage. I took my Insight in for the rear camera software update recall on Friday and it didn’t happen any other time before or since the software update. It was kind of scary and quite annoying to be honest. I should have avoided getting the recall done as I think it screwed with my infotainment system. Back to the dealer I go if it happens again. 😞

I read here a number of reports of info console rebooting while driving. Someone suggested (maybe it was on the "quirks" thread) that getting the rear camera recall fix would stop the info reboot. It did not for me - the one time I had reboot was after the rear camera update.

I had the infotainment system reboot on me for the first time today since I got the car a couple months ago. I was backing up after a brief 7-Eleven stop and noticed there were no proximity lines on the screen for the backup camera. When I shifted into drive, the system rebooted and seems to be fine. I don't use Android Auto or CarPlay.

Has anyone experienced various issues with their infotainment system? Namely: the screen randomly goes black (audio is still going) and turns back on, complete shut off and turns back on a few minutes later like I just turned the car on, and just overall poor call quality? I was on the phone and the person on the other side said they heard a low rumbling static-type noise which I believe I heard on a different call.. My 2016 Honda Accord had better call quality than this!

I've made an appointment with my Honda dealer to try and fix this but wanted to know if anyone else is having issues similar to mine.

The microphone is near the front map lights on the ceiling. During a call, I tested speaking while having my head turned toward the microphone, facing forward, and facing left driver window. Surprisingly, all positions yielded the same sound quality and level. For best sound, the manual also suggests adjusting the dashboard and side air vents away from the ceiling microphone.

The crashing has got to get patched. I hope they do something.

I'm renting a Kia Optima while traveling and the design of the head unit is just completely inferior to the Display Audio. Inexpensive resistive touchscreen; poor color saturation; ugly "stylish" GUI. But it does have CarPlay, and it hasn't crashed yet!

I see this issue has been mentioned in a few different places, but thought it would be nice to have all the info centralized to see if there is any commonality in what causes it and what fixes it. I'll start:

At 568 miles, while driving down the road with satellite radio on and Bluetooth connected wirelessly to my Apple XR, the whole screen just went black, turned off and rebooted itself. Build date is 03/19 so it should have the most recent programming.

I'm also having other random issues with the screen. For instance, sometimes while on a call, a screen saying "audio unavailable while on a call" superimposes over everything else, not allowing me to use the touchscreen to end the call or anything else for that matter. EXTREMELY annoying.

Secondly, 8 times out of 10, no matter what screen I'm on, if I make a call or end it, the screen automatically reverts to the phone screen showing recent calls/favorites/etc. I have to manually push the app button at top of screen to go back to the radio or press the Home button and then whichever screen I was on. Also, EXTREMELY annoying.

So far, I'm unimpressed with HondaLink and a bit concerned these kinds of problems are already rearing their ugly head. I expect WAY more out of a Honda.

I've had my EX since Fall 2018, built 10/2018. I primarily connect my iPhone via bluetooth and haven't experienced the screen reboots, random screen messages/issues, or phone screen default described. BUT given the number of incidents and forum members reporting issues, it seems like it's just a matter of time (or a wayward software update away) until these issues might occur. I'm interested in seeing the responses and how people manage these incidents to learn what to do if/when it happens.

I had maybe 3 black screen reboots since I owned the car. I haven't had any reboots in awhile, mostly just the random carplay disconnections. What I mean by this is that the display audio will boot me out of carplay as if I pulled out my lightning cable. Unplugging the lightning cable and plugging the lightning cable back in my iPhone will fix it.

Infotainment Restarts / Goes Blank

Have been logging some longer drives now in the Insight - have noticed that the infotainment system on occasion restarts, maybe 2 or 3 times in a 5 hour drive. Most importantly nav remembers which way it was going, but until it restarts...you're momentarily left without guidance. I think audio remembers what it was doing as well.

I guess as long as something, even Android based, is going to be computer driven...it might crash. Just don't think my phone crashes quite as often.

As long as we are all experiencing this on occasion, not sure there's much to be done.

Are you using the Touring's Garmin Nav or Waze/Google Maps via Android Auto/CarPlay? You can try to force a hard reboot which has fixed some weird glitches for other owners. The Display Audio tablet is actually running all the time even when you shut off the car. Mine currently has an uptime of around 940 hours since I last did a hard reboot.

Infotainment goes blank

Really weird thing happened to me. I’m driving and listening to the radio and all of a sudden radio stops and the infotainment screen goes blank. About 30 seconds later it turns on with radio playing, same station and volume that it was prior to cutting off. I have the EX trim. Also the Sirius radio subscription expired around this time. I really didn’t listen to Sirius so it’s hard for me to say if this issue was due to Sirius yanking the subscription or not. Let me know if this is something I should be concerned about or if it’s nothing. I really doubt the guys at the dealership could track down the issue. This is the only issue I’ve experienced with the car.

Check out these parallel threads to see if they help. Suggestions include screen reboot/reset, getting the head unit replaced, and filing complaint with Honda and/or NACDS.

If you're experiencing these issues while using CarPlay, there are some additional suggestions to try from these threads, namely cable-check and screen reboot/reset.

Infotainment system crashes?!

I was on a call via CarPlay today when suddenly I could no longer hear my interlocutor and the Infotainment screen suddenly went blank. A little while later, the startup warning message appeared and the "OK" button was grayed out, so it seems safe to assume that the Infotainment system crashed and rebooted.

Has this happened to anyone else?

I had to look up interlocutor - I have never heard that term used before lol.

Here are some threads where CarPlay crashes are discussed in the 'Complaints' section of forum:

There isn't a definitive solution, but some of the suggestions offered in the threads include checking your cable and changing your iOS version.

I just updated to iOS 12.4 yesterday and had performed a restore factory defaults on the Infotainment system an hour earlier …*Will try another cable.

Funny you raise this question as my Honda service advisor just told me that my issues with my radio are caused by using an Apple phone. He claims I wouldn’t have those issues if I used an Android. He blames Apple for not releasing programming info so they can fix the bugs.

My radio has only froze once but I only use the Bluetooth connection to my Apple XR, not CarPlay. Instead, my radio never returns to the previous screen when I end a call and every time I place or answer a call, I get an error message saying “audio not available during call” that blocks me from using any of the buttons in the center of the screen. The only way to clear this message is to press the phone button at the top of the screen. I demonstrated this to the advisor and he just shrugged and said it’s because it’s an Apple. Not exactly the helpful attitude I expected.

While I like the style of the Hondalink, it’s poorly designed and implemented. Chrysler’s and Hyundai’s systems are way better designed and have none of these operating issues regardless of phone type.
