Third recall on this vehicle and I haven’t even owned it for a year. Starting to regret my purchase.
The recalls mostly has to do with the parts supplier Denso(Fuel pump), Mitsubishi(DC-DC converter), and Sumitomo(BCM wiring). I'm fine with recalls as long as the automaker is being proactive about it. I'll regret my purchase if government intervention is required for the automaker to issue a recall though. Mistakes happen and how they resolve it matters, too.

Examples:

This recall affects a LARGE number of manufacturers including Toyota. The manufacturer Denso is actually an affiliate of Toyota (for now). A list of manufacturers being affected by this are Ford, Subaru, Misubishi - a total of about 3.5 million cars are being recalled.

RECALL: March 25, 2021 - Fuel Pump May Fail (NHTSA 21V215000)

Just got a notice about this recall on Gas Buddy this morning. I looked up my VIN and it said that there were no open recalls on my 2019 LX, but the NHTSA website said that the recall would begin May 18, 2021.

Haa anyone else gotten a notice about this? And this might be a dumb question, but if I am not currently seeing a recall notice, does that mean my car will likely not need one? I'm pretty new to car ownership and wasn't sure if NHTSA defines "beginning the recall" as (a) notices for recall would start going out on May 18 OR (b) recall notices are being sent now and the actual recall repairs can start being scheduled on May 18.

Looks like the additional cars being recalled for fuel pump are being identified under a new NHTSA recall ID (21V215000), rather than as an add/expansion of prior recall ID (20V314000).

A few forum members started receiving early CarFax notice of expanded fuel pump recall ~2 days ago. CarFax (and now apparently GasBuddy?) has notified owners earlier than Honda or the NHTSA on this fuel pump and other (BCM/PCU) recalls.

The fuel pump recall expansion wasn't showing in on the NHTSA site as of 2 days ago, but is now listed as a new recall on the NHTSA site for the 2019 and 2020 Insight (and other affected Hondas). 5/18/21 is the date Honda has until to being notification by mail; however electronic VIN look up available now.

Check your VIN on the NHTSA recall site and/or Honda recall site as the official places for recall notification. It will also tell you if your VIN is affected by the BCM recall or PCU recall. If your VIN shows up on the NHTSA or Honda site, it will also show up when the dealer looks up your VIN. They're only able to order the part for you and complete the work under warranty when your VIN shows up as a recall in Honda's system.

I received a GasBuddy recall notification for my 2019 this morning. I had the original fuel pump recall done a couple months ago. I don't believe GasBuddy is sending based on a VIN - I think they're just shot-gunning all VINS within the scope regardless of whether they had the work done or not. Honda shows my 2019 as being up-to-date on recalls.

I got one as well, interesting that I'm in Canada but got an NHTSA recall notification... I also got a previous notification from them about the DC/DC recall but when contacting a dealer my VIN was not part of that recall.

EDIT: The recall is up on the Transport Canada website. It's also very interesting that they note that it is an extension of the original fuel pump recall (last line of the issue paragraph):

Here's a summary of the NHTSA update posted for newly affected US Insights:

2019 Insight (US)2020 Insight (US)
Original Recall14949 - built 5/23/18 to 3/8/19 10 - built 8/26/19 to 9/17/19
Expanded Recall+4792 - built 11/28/18 to 3/7/19+3723 - built 9/4/19 to 5/13/20
Total US Insights197413733

Nationally, the US recall expansion affects 628,124 vehicles (on top of the 135,995 vehicles identified in the original recall). The Insight was 11% of the original recall total, but <1% of the recall expansion total.

After the original recall in May 2020, Honda developed a new measurement in Sep/Oct 2020 (resin density vs overall density) to assess the likelihood that impeller material will swell and lead to failure:
  • When applying resin density instead of the overall density to the criteria used to determine part toughness in failed returned field parts, resin density provided increased accuracy in predicting part failure.
  • The updated criteria was then applied to all fuel pump manufacturing lots built during the suspect period to determine the likelihood of part failure.

Based on your signature, your Insight(certified pre-owned) could already be part of the original recall and your dealership would've done the recall before selling the vehicle to you. It takes about a week for Honda's recall database to update after they announce the recall publicly.

Yay, looks like I avoided BOTH fuel pump recalls. Pretty cool they can narrow down which cars are affected so precisely.

As of today, my 2020 EX (which I believe was built in Jan 2020) has yet to be showing a need for a fuel pump recall through Honda/HondaLink or NHTSA. Guess I got lucky on this one.

I know my car sat on the lot for about 7 months before I purchased it, but there's no reason why they would have done the repair during that time since my manufacturing date didn't fall under the first recall and the second was just last month.

I'll keep monitoring just in case.

I always wondered why people had a faint smell of gas after the repair. Now I know because I have some cushions on the underside of my backseats due to a backseat mod that I did and one of the cushions was in back seat when I got car today, So it looks like they’re going under the backseat for the fuel pump.

The repair instructions for the fuel pump recall show the fuel pump location and rear seat removal process.
