Guess some of our Insights decided to take a crash today. The same thing happened to me while listening to SiriusXM. I had 2000+ hours of uptime so at least I got a reboot out of it without having to try manually triggering it.

I did a proactive reboot last evening. I haven't had any unexpected restarts since I started doing that regularly.

I was on a call via CarPlay today when suddenly I could no longer hear my interlocutor and the Infotainment screen suddenly went blank. A little while later, the startup warning message appeared and the "OK" button was grayed out, so it seems safe to assume that the Infotainment system crashed and rebooted.

Has this happened to anyone else?
I had to look up interlocutor - I have never heard that term used before lol.

I wonder if when iOS updates, it has some sort of update that it pushes to the infotainment system, could stand to reason increased crashes. Just a thought.

Here are some threads where CarPlay crashes are discussed in the 'Complaints' section of forum:

There isn't a definitive solution, but some of the suggestions offered in the threads include checking your cable and changing your iOS version.
I don't think it's the cable. I think the version of Android that they're using to run the Infotainment center is unstable, at least when it's running CarPlay.

Now that Honda is a software company, is there a way to report bugs? Otherwise, how will this get fixed?

Honda hasn't been responsive to consumer complaints on the infotainment system, and is now facing class action lawsuits for the Odyssey and Pilot (and potentially more Honda models to follow?). The second link below mentions that Honda acknowledged a "software-related" problem with the 2018 Odyssey, and is working on an over-the-air (OTA) update.

Honda's Warranty process suggests the following escalation steps if "Customer Satisfaction" issues aren't satisfactorily addressed:
1 - Address concerns to dealership
2 - Call or write to Honda Automobile Customer Service
3 - File claim with National Center for Dispute Settlement (NCDS) for independent review

You can also file a safety-related complaint (e.g. driver distraction?) with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA):

You can report bugs/issues using the HondaLink app. Touch Support>Customer Support>Customer Feedback. I also found a phone number for Honda's In-Car Technology Support: (888) 528-7876.

Haven't had a crash in quite a while. I wonder if it crashes more with apple equipment hooked up than with Android. Anyone notice any trends?
Funny you raise this question as my Honda service advisor just told me that my issues with my radio are caused by using an Apple phone. He claims I wouldn’t have those issues if I used an Android. He blames Apple for not releasing programming info so they can fix the bugs.

My radio has only froze once but I only use the Bluetooth connection to my Apple XR, not CarPlay. Instead, my radio never returns to the previous screen when I end a call and every time I place or answer a call, I get an error message saying “audio not available during call” that blocks me from using any of the buttons in the center of the screen. The only way to clear this message is to press the phone button at the top of the screen. I demonstrated this to the advisor and he just shrugged and said it’s because it’s an Apple. Not exactly the helpful attitude I expected.

While I like the style of the Hondalink, it’s poorly designed and implemented. Chrysler’s and Hyundai’s systems are way better designed and have none of these operating issues regardless of phone type.

YES! My Insight is on it's FOURTH nav/infotainment screen since I bought the car in Feb 2019. It began within a week of driving it off the lot. The screen repeatedly went black, crashed, rebooted itself, etc. I would lose all audio, even a phone call I was on. I had the car at the dealership no less than 7 times in a 6 month period trying to get the problem resolved. Since the original infotainment screen, they have replaced it three times. So far - about two months now - the fourth screen has been working. They first tried blaming my iPhone (not it), my lightening cable (I replaced it with no change to the problem), something I was doing to it, my female imagination, etc. Finally, I caught it on my dashcam by sticking the camera to the top of Yeti cup in my cup holder to record the screen while I drove. It only took a day before the screen crashed on video and they had to believe my story. They replaced my screen with a "temporary" one. I drove it for several weeks with no problem, so they changed it out with a "permanent" replacement. Well the "permanent" screen only worked for about a month before it started crashing too. My husband happened to be in my car with me on the 4th of July and I had forgotten my phone at home - a truly bizarre occurrance for me - when the screen went black from me turning on my right turn signal. He started recording with his cell phone and we caught nearly the whole incident on video. So the dealership installed a fourth nav/infotainment screen. This last time they claimed I had a bad "audio unit" behind the screen. But I wasn't even using any audio at the time - no radio, no Sirius, and I had left my phone at home. It was triggered by my turn signal, not anything to do with audio. I'm kind of holding my breath waiting for the fourth screen to go down in flames.

Apple user... Yes I have had it crash... and or glitch out a few times... Call comes in, and stays in phone mode cannot get Waze back on navigation. Stop/Restart clears the problems but a pain when you would like the navigation up but stays locked on the phone...

Android user here and I have had problems too. The system has gotten more stable and I haven't had a crash in many months now. Granted I don't use Android auto much, but I have started using Bluetooth a lot lately so I'll let you know what happens. I hope you are keeping all records on this problem and looking into your local lemon laws just in case your problem continues as bad as it is. Good luck.

Have you ask them to check the condition of your 12v battery? Sounds odd but we recently received some reports of defective 12v batteries causing all sorts of weird issues with the car. Also check if they have a software update available for the car. Sounds unlikely the root cause is a defective infotainment screen after going through 4 replacements.

This is "kind of, sort of" related.

I have a friend with a 2018 Accord Hybrid that has chronic infotainment screen restarts. So much so, that he is pursuing the lemon law for relief. He noticed that, when the infotainment screen resets, power for all USB cycles as well. This points to an underlying electrical issue and not simply the infotainment screen. Can anyone with an Insight say of their USB power cycles with the infotainment crashes? When this happens to my friend, he notes the "uptime" for the infotainment system resets as well. This points to a system reboot OR cycle of power to the unit itself. His unit has been replaced once already along with several other dealer reviews of the unit - to no avail.

I have to say, that I haven't noticed as many crashes lately and can't say there were really any changes on our end. When it does happen, I figure, it'll come back up in a sec where everything was (audio and nav). Yeah annoying, but I guess anything software driven, I'll expect a crash occasionally. I did notice though that when it is locked up (that happens too), that holding down the power/volume knob does also force a reset (unless that just happened to be coincidence).

I feel like I got a new phone a while ago, so I don't think that did it, and the new iOS 13 CarPlay just came recently. And I can't be certain that the crashes even occured while phone was connected (at least by cable). [I guess it's always connected at least by Bluetooth]

Yes, Bluetooth is super reliable; I've had no issues to-date. Shouldn't 4 replacements already qualify for lemon law? @KLX4 what state are you in? The law/timeline varies by state and this is electrical vs mechanical... but seems like lemon laws should already apply.

The usb power cycle thing may in fact be part of the software reset process, and not an underlying electrical issue. Unfortunately we haven't been blessed with carte blanch access to the electrical schematics, but if you think about it from a computer perspective the usb controller is most likely integrated into the audio units processor board, so when the board resets, usb power should be suspended temporarily. If it were just a charging port, (just wired to power, and had no data capability) then I'd personally be more concerned if it cycled.

Screen went black last week Tuesday night, Im driving home from work. I was making a lane change, flipped the right turn signal on and it went black. Music was still on but none of the buttons worked. Turned off the stereo turned it back on still black screen. When I get home I turned off the car then turned it on and the screen came back on.

screen didnt go dark on me until tonight. I was doing the same thing I was doing last Tuesday, driving home from work, flipped the right signal on and black screen again. exited the freeway with the screen still in black mode, stopped at a light, put the car in park, turned off the car and turned it back on the screen didnt turn on. I get home did the off on thing to the car and the screen comes back on. What gives? Going to take it into the dealer on day off.

During my first "electrical system freak-out" I dealt with this as well. It seems that there is some set amount of time before the systems will actually re-boot. It seems to be ~15 minutes minimum. Ask the dealer to check for any system updates (not for the audio unit, but the actual car). I know they updated my car in July and I haven't had any issues yet.

Another test, if this happens again, get somewhere where you can put it in reverse, if the back-up camera doesn't come up on the screen, they have to fix it. It's a federally mandated safety feature. If I were you, and that is the case, make them provide you with a loaner/rental if it's going to take longer than a day, that'll sure make them get to it.

Mine locked up on me last week. Was using navigation and radio. The radio went dead and the nav screen locked on the map. No buttons worked and I couldn't change anything. This is the 2nd time (last time was a long time ago) it has happened. I couldn't stop as I was on a highway so I just let it do whatever it was going to do. A few minutes (maybe 5 minutes?) later the screen went black and the whole infotainment system rebooted all by itself. Has worked normally ever since.
